About Tahawy Group
A trusted rolling-stock partner since the early 20th century
Tahawy Group is an Egyptian rolling-stock supply and engineering-representation group. For over a century we have brought the world’s leading railway technology to Egypt — supplying bogies, wheels, couplers, bearings, freight wagons and coach systems to Egyptian National Railways and Egyptian factories, and supporting local manufacturing and technology transfer.
What we do
Three roles, one mission
Representing global principals
We represent and supply leading rolling-stock manufacturers — Amsted Rail (USA), Ganz Motor (Hungary) and Kiruna Wagon (Sweden) — providing bogies, wheels, bearings, couplers and complete wagon systems to Egyptian National Railways and Egyptian factories.
Proven project execution
From the 1,000 Freight Wagons programme to completed power-coach deliveries, we coordinate supply, engineering support and delivery for landmark projects on Egypt’s railway network.
Building local capability
Tahawy Group supports Egypt’s railway industrial base through local manufacturing, assembly, technology transfer and project delivery with international principals and Egyptian production teams.
Since 1912
From royal trains to today’s freight fleets
Hassan El Tahawy founded the company at the beginning of the 20th century, initially working in construction and rolling stock. Between 1925 and 1938, the company supplied Egyptian National Railways with 32 complete train sets — some of which formed the Egyptian Royal Train, renowned for its association with the Orient Express.
In 1974, Mohamed Abdel Moneim El-Tahawy restructured the company to undertake large-scale projects. In the decades that followed, it supplied Hungarian and French passenger fleets, 245 Henschel locomotives and 31 Ganz-MÁVAG locomotives. The landmark Spanish Train Project involved more than 5,000 coaches supplied and refurbished with Temoinsa between 1991 and 2003 and was recognised by King Juan Carlos I of Spain.
Since 2012, under the chairmanship of Dr. Amr El Tahawy, the group has deepened its cooperation with Egyptian industry and secured major modern programmes, including the 2021 Amsted Rail freight bogie system agreement for 1,000 wagons, the 2022 Kiruna Wagon licensed side-dumper partnership, and 100 power coaches delivered by 2023 using Ganz Motor bogies.
Leadership & legacy
Three generations of railway partnership
Tahawy Group has been led by three generations of the El Tahawy family — each extending Egypt’s access to the world’s best railway technology.
Today the group operates through Tahawy Rail — with branches in Cairo, Bahrain and Dubai, serving Egyptian National Railways, Egyptian factories, and railway customers across the region.
