Localization & Technology Transfer

Building Egypt’s railway industrial capability

Tahawy Group is not only a trading company. Beyond supply, we support Egypt’s railway industrial base — coordinating technology transfer with our international principals, working with Egyptian factories, and supporting local assembly, manufacturing cooperation and industrial integration.

A legacy of industrial cooperation

Four decades working with Egyptian factories

Since 1980, Tahawy has supported Egypt’s railway industrial base through running gear, components, manufacturing technology and engineering coordination for locally produced passenger coaches, power coaches and freight wagons.

Licensed manufacturing

300 Side-Dump Wagons

Under the 2022 agreement with Kiruna Wagon, Tahawy Rail is Kiruna’s licensed partner in North Africa and the Middle East for the development and licensed manufacturing of self-discharging Side Dumper wagons for ENR, supported by Tahawy-led local production coordination.

Local assembly & training

75 Grain Wagons

Kiruna Wagon bottom gates and discharge mechanisms are assembled locally with Tahawy–Kiruna technical guidance — transferring know-how to Egyptian engineers and technicians.

Components for local production

1,000 Freight Wagons

Amsted Rail Motion Control bogies, wheelsets and automatic couplers supplied for locally manufactured wagons for Egyptian National Railways under Tahawy’s technology and production coordination — the single largest freight bogie system supply agreement in Amsted’s international history.

Power-coach production

100 Power Coaches Delivered

Completed in 2023, the programme used Ganz Motor bogie technology and continues Tahawy’s long-running power-coach record.

Production in practice

Local capability, documented on the production line

These photographs show the work behind localization: bogie assembly, completed wagon structures leaving the paint line, and finished flat wagons prepared as a train for final checks and delivery.

Production & field support

A practical presence where the work happens

Successful localization depends on daily coordination, not only equipment supply. Our role brings principals, Egyptian manufacturing partners, project teams and operators into one working process.

From technical clarification and assembly follow-up to component staging, inspection records and delivery readiness, we support the details that move a programme from plan to operating fleet.

01 / COORDINATION

Production coordination

Aligning the principal, local manufacturing partner and operator around drawings, specifications, interfaces and programme priorities.

02 / ON SITE

Assembly & technical follow-up

Supporting installation, assembly sequencing, technical clarification and practical issue resolution with the teams carrying out the work.

03 / LOGISTICS

Storage & component staging

Coordinating shipment, storage and component-release sequences so the right material and documentation reach production when needed.

04 / READINESS

Quality & fleet entry

Following inspection records, outstanding items and delivery preparation to support an orderly transition from production to service.

How we work

From supply to localized production

Our localization role is precise and practical. Tahawy Group:

  • Supplies components for locally manufactured rolling stock
  • Coordinates technology transfer between global principals and Egyptian factories
  • Supports local assembly, supervision and training in selected projects
  • Facilitates local manufacturing cooperation and industrial integration
  • Acts as local manufacturing partner in selected projects

Components with strong localization potential include bogie assembly, wagon bodies and gates, discharge mechanisms and brake fitment — each pursued with the relevant principal and factory, project by project.

The path of technology

From global principals to Egyptian capability

A consistent, project-proven process brings international railway technology into Egyptian production.

Global principals

Proven railway technology from Amsted Rail, Ganz Motor, Kiruna Wagon and other international manufacturers.

Tahawy coordination

Representation, supply agreements, engineering coordination and project management in Egypt.

Egyptian manufacturing

Cooperation with Egyptian factories on local assembly, manufacturing and supervision in selected projects.

Local capability

Technology transfer, training and industrial integration that build long-term national capability.

Looking ahead

The localization roadmap

Egypt is building a domestic rolling-stock industry, and Tahawy Group intends to remain the bridge — deepening technology transfer with our principals, expanding the scope manufactured locally, and supporting Egyptian factories in every programme where we can add proven technology and four decades of supply experience.
